A Day of Discoveries

Joni's picture

It is surprising how much you can learn in just one day!
Today I learned (after almost 3 months of living here), that I have a drawer in my kitchen. John knew the whole time, but didn’t think to clue me in. I think that I may throw a “Hey! We have a drawer!” party this weekend.

Also, I realized that I haven’t used a can-opener once since being here. Isn’t that amazing? My trusty red KitchenAid can-opener was one of the most frequently used items in our kitchen in Iowa/Minnesota. This means that we haven’t been eating much if any canned goods (I opened our first can today actually, a can of garbanzo beans for hummus(what a great word…garbanzo, it kind of rolls of the tongue)).

I also realized that I don’t think I’ve consumed ANYTHING with hydrogenated corn syrup. YAY! That is incredible. Coming from the US where EVERYTHING has hydrogenated corn oil/syrup, this is an incredible feat. I noticed this also while making hummus. As usual, I opened the jar of peanut butter (my first peanut butter for who knows how long), and as is a custom of my family, the first thing I did after peeling open the tin top was to gouge my finger deep in to the well of oooey-gooey peanut butter and take a huge lick. The first thing I noticed was that this strange concoction actually tasted like peanuts. The second thing I noticed was that my tongue didn’t feel all oily (hence the realization that there was no hydrogenated corn oil).

I’ve had this weird rash on my right hand for some time now. Probably on and off for 2 years. I’ve been to the doctor several times for it and every time they tell me that the rash is caused by “dishpan hands” and that I need to stop doing dishes. Okay, no problem right? Not quite, it’s never that easy or great of a diagnosis. I stopped doing dishes, but still have the stupid rash. So this weekend I went online and I think I may have figured out a plausible reason for my hands looking like a circus act.

Eczema can be caused by wheat/milk allergy. So this week I’ve ceased eating pasta, croissants, baguettes and all other major staples of my diet to see if maybe just maybe I can finally get rid of this rash. So if you have any suggestions for dairy-free/wheat-free meals, please let me know!

Elimination Diet

After reading bigsis's comment, I had to agree with her about the elimination diet. Is this really the time to eliminate food from your diet? Feeling deprived during a year abroad, experiencing all that Europe has to offer is not a good way to spend a year.

But after talking to the other sister... YIKES! I will be looking into a glucose/wheat free cookbook, vitamens, and other "freaky granola head" things for you.

I wish you guys were here! We believe that with Xander's eyelashes that he'll have to join John in being a harem leader. If you guys know how I can send a .mov file, please let me know. I have the most beautiful clip of MeganJo with Xander and her dad, Dan, together. It is just amazing.

Lots of love,
Ash

Spiders!

You are right about those lashes! Xander's lashes look almost like spiders! They are so very very long and beautiful.

He looks very tiny, how much did he weigh? With that full head of hair, I am thinking that he was not early. Am I right?

You are right

Alexander was one week over due. He was 7lbs, 1oz. I don't know how tall he was though. He has gigantic feet and super long fingers. He was the talk of all the nurses and spent quite some time at the nurses station between transports to and from MeganJo's room.

Happy Bday

Hey Jo! Happy birthday. I am sad to hear that you left the double duece club. It seems like you fall bday girls are always having birthdays and I'm always trying to catch up! Oh well. If I can't get a different plane ticket, would you guys like to celebrate New Year's Eve with me in Munich??

By the way, it is 5:30pm Iowa time and MeganJo's water broke about 15 minutes ago and she is 2cm dialated. Her dad is there with her and she did get induced this morning around 7am. I will keep you updated when I learn anything new.

Love,
Ash

Attention!!!

John and Joni!! I need you to reply to me immediately. I am probably (99% chance) going to Germany and Austria over winter break. Right now the scheduled dates are December 28-January 8. I can change my ticket date and still pay the same, or cheaper price, to head over there. I'd like to come maybe a week early or something. I'd like to work it out with you guys to see the area and spend time in bed (haha). If I don't contact the study abroad guy by Friday November 4th (at noon I believe), then he will assume that I am going with the rest of the group. Plllleeeeaaaseee let me know a date range that would work for you guys, and if it doesn't work out, then I will just have to catch you guys another time.

On another note, did you guys celebrate Halloween??? Have a wonderful day/evening.

Love,
Ash

Good luck with that!

So, my dear freaky sister, what exactly are you people going to eat? No meat, dairy, wheat or corn oil. That leaves what? Nothing!
Casey has eczema and we have some ointment that helps tremendously. Do you want me to send it Juli or Jaci to put it in a package going over to Deutchland?
I think that while you are there, you need to experience all the wonderful tastes and stuff that will make your year over there memorable. (That's kind of how I feel about you guys spending all your time in bed but then again, I am not a newlywed;>) (Supposed to be a winking guy!)

Insensitive! I apologize...

I just got an email from Joni describing how terrible this eczema is. I have to admitt, if I had something that horrible I would give up whatever I had to to get rid of it. So I need to apologize for my insensitive comments about them needing to get out and try all good stuff over there. I guess they will need to experience Germany in other ways!
Wasn't there a couple of guys a few years ago who brought a red couch to different places. For example, I think they went to Mt.Rushmore and had their picture taken on the couch with the monument in the background. Maybe John & Joni could take their bed to the different places in Germany and kill two birds with one stone!
