Coincidence
Is this a coincidence that this freakishly weird holiday falls so close to Fat Tuesday. It appears that both of them celebrate by doning strange masks, having a parade, throwing stuff at onlookers, and having a merry time.

Yes Indeed
They actually handed out beer at the parade. It's Germany's version of Mardi Gras, I think that in Basel the fest goes on a little longer than Ash Wednesday.
